Hi Adam, Sorry I haven't done the BIOS shots yet.

1. Graphics card is in the main PCI Express Card at the top (nearest the CPU), MY PCI Sound Card (Layla 3G) below that and UAD QUAD below that. I have them all quite close together as I seem to remember checking which slots were shared IRQs.
2. I am not using my old UAD1 I'm afraid.
3. I am using the default Win7 drivers but using the driver at the ASUS site http://support.asus.de/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us for the USB 3 Port.
I hope that may be some help and it is no trouble at all. May well be better to use emails though for more info at a later date. If you PM me at the Sb forum I will send you email, although it is available on my contact page.
Cheers, :-)

Thanks Phil, I appreciate your help, I'll definately cover your time for this as it saves me a huge amount time messing around ;-)
What would be REALLY handy right now is:
1. Which slots do you have your cards installed to. ie. your sound, graphics and your UAD Quad etc.
2. Also are you using your old UAD-1? If so, in which PCI slot ?
3. Are you using the Marvell drivers for the Sata3 ports or are they the default Win 7 drivers?

The above info would be really useful a.s.a.p., thanks mate.
Cheers for now,
Adam

Hi Adam, I am going to send you some screen shots of my BIOS. Unfortunately (as you probably know) there is no way of doing this other than using a camera. I will get it done in next few days though.

Also sounds encouraging that you have traced the CPU spikes, I must admit I have had no such trouble.

Auto Affinity should not be required at all now as long as you have the latest UAD Drivers and make sure "Enable CPU Optimisation" is checked - in UAD Control Panel > Config.

I'll get back to you with the BIOS stuff asap. :-)

Hey Phil,
Any info on your BIOS settings would be great.
I have exactly the same motherboard and CPU as you ;-)
I've extracted the old PoCo PCI Mk2 and replaced with a PCIe version, version4 SW supports 64bit drivers. Seem's a lot better.
Stability isn't an issue, no crashes whatsoever under Win7.
I think I've the traced the CPU spikes to a particular plugin I was trialing (NuGen Visualizer) but I can't be certain yet. Also is the 'Auto affinity' fix still relevant on these i7's? Thanks for your help :-)

Hi Adam, I had a ton of problems with Vista 64 and Powercore and also Firewire Sound Card but that was long, long time ago, I am sure drivers will have been improved by now. I do still swear by my PCI Sound Card though. I have made a few tweaks but nothing mind-blowing. In fact most of the tweaks I have made I ended up reversing as they seemed pretty pointless. Windows 7 has been smooth and stable for me apart from a few issues which are down to my own testing and tinkering (that you know a little about I think).

BIOS - It is important to enable CPU stepping (which seems counter-intuitive) but this also enables turbo mode. If you need more info on that let me know and I will get more specific.

Which motherboard do you have?

:-)

hmmmm.done a bit more investigation, CPU spikes happen when holding mouse button down on plugin/preset windows/pop-up menus etc., it would appear to be a driver issue or PCI bandwidth sharing.... need to investigate further.... did you have these problems?... say's he pointing finger at old PCI Powecore MkII ;-)

Hi Phil,
Well, I've been using my new rig (very similar to yours) it's all working very swiftly and incredibly stable too. One problem I am finding is (using Cubendo 32bit) the occassional processor audio-glitch, even if the VST performance meter is hovering around 35-40%. I was wondering if there's something not setup quite correctly within Win 7 or my BIOS. You mentioned something (somewhere) about getting all the cores running efficiently, is there a method to that? There was something else with 'auto affinity', what was that & is it applicable to my machine? Sorry to be a bit vague. Maybe you could list your 'crucial' BIOS settings and any important settings within Win 7? That would be truly appreciated. I'll cover your time with some more beer money! :-)

Hi Greg,

Yup but I'll be honest I am not using RAID. I have tried all the different RAID configs over the years and to me they are more hassle than they are worth.

This machine is running at 1 - 2 ms latency for Digital Audio (in Cubase / Neundo), using a very big project with no sweat at all. What would be a great help would be to replace a couple of the drives with SSD but that's out of my price range at the moment.

Cheers,

Holy Jesus! Did I read the specs right? Do you really have 4 10000RPM HDs in that thing? What raid are you using? That's awesome Phil!
