Using Custom Clicks in Cubase & Neundo

Pattern 4x4

Using own custom clicks in the latest versions of Cubase or Nuendo is a great way to help you stay in time with your DAW.

For many years, click tracks have been made from all kinds of things, sometimes full grooves and even the MD directing using vocal cues. Finally from Cubase 9.5 onwards and Nuendo 8 onwards, we have the ability to use our own sounds and our own patterns.

For me, one of the best uses of this is to make a simple 4/4 pattern that utilizes all 4 different available click sounds (instead of the standard 2)

Here is an example of my default click pattern for 4/4 tracks.

4x4 Click Pattern
4×4 Click Pattern

In the pattern above (for 4/4 time), you can see the following:

  • The RED diamond that represents count 1 on the first beat of the bar.
  • The GREY diamonds on row 4 represent the usual beats 2, 3 and 4 of the bar. This is what a normal old style click pattern consists of.
  • Now we add the ORANGE and GREEN diamonds that go between the normal 4 count click markers in the AND positions.

I find that having these AND areas a little quiet in volume but still audible, really helps with the feel of the click.

So the pattern becomes: 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND

Or if you want to have different count on every beat (this pattern will allow, for example, using a recorded voice counting 1,2,3,4 on each beat of the bar):

1 2 3 4
1 2 3 4

So the pattern becomes: 1 2 4

The easiest way to set this is up is in the Click Patterns Tab area which you access from the Transport Menu: Transport > Metronome > Click Patterns

Metronome Setup

Hit the plus button to make a new pattern or double click to edit an existing one.

You can then select the pattern to play on the Signature Track at the main project page.

Once the pattern is made, you can start to have some fun designing your own click sets and sounds. Go to the Click Sounds Tab: Transport > Metronome > Click Sounds

Here you can import samples and use them in any of the playable areas. You can also save them as presets. As you can see I have a number of my own already done. They really do make a huge difference to the creative process.

If you don’t have the time or energy to make your own sounds, all of mine are available from the shop here for a few token pennies. It contains over 40 different custom click sound presets and over 90 brand new click samples.

Note: You will still have to make your own patterns, as these are not sharable.

Also they are constantly being updated at no extra charge.
